Shellac in biodegradable glitter

The Role of Shellac in Biodegradable Glitter

As more people look for alternatives to plastic glitter, it’s worth knowing exactly what goes into eco glitter. Some of our ranges use a natural ingredient you might not expect: shellac.

Our Shimmer and Holographic ranges of biodegradable glitter contain shellac. Let’s take a closer look at what that means.

What is shellac?

Shellac is a natural resin secreted by the lac bug, a tiny insect. It has been used for centuries in all sorts of ways, from furniture polish to the glaze on sweets. In biodegradable glitter, shellac can act as part of the coating, helping to bind the finish to the glitter particles and keep them durable.

A natural resin

Unlike synthetic resins, shellac is a natural, renewable material. Lac bugs feed on the sap of certain trees, and the resin they produce is collected and processed for a wide range of uses.

Why is shellac used in glitter?

Shellac’s binding properties help make biodegradable glitter that looks great and lasts. As part of the coating, it helps the glitter hold together without shedding or crumbling, and gives a smooth, glossy finish.

Is glitter with shellac vegan?

No. Because shellac comes from insects, our Shimmer and Holographic ranges are vegetarian-friendly but not vegan. If you’d prefer a vegan option, choose our Sparkle or Electric Sherbet ranges.
